Rain Gardens
Stormwater runoff from roofs, pavement, sidewalks and turf grass lawns is the cause of most urban flooding and downstream water pollution. When it rains, pollutants that collect on surfaces and chemicals that are applied to lawns are transported into lakes, rivers and streams. These pollutants contaminate our waters and imperil wildlife.
Rain gardens are shallow depressions in the ground planted with deep-rooted native plants designed to absorb rainwater. Water runoff is captured, filtered of its pollutants and infiltrated into the ground instead of running off, flooding out the yard and downstream neighbors, and entering directly into our waterways. Properly designed, rain gardens are practical, beautiful and functional. They also provide habitat for songbirds, butterflies and other beneficial wildlife.
